WC Campaign

In brief

Where? → restrooms in venues open to the public

For whom? → teenagers and adults

What is it about?

The WC information campaign aims to contribute to the protection of personal integrity.

To inform and raise awareness among victims of physical, psychological, and/or sexual violence – as well as their loved ones – stickers are offered free of charge to institutions and venues open to the public in French-speaking Switzerland, to be placed in restrooms.

These small round stickers (ø 64 mm) provide access to the website www.victimepasseule.ch and, through it, to all institutional (LAVI centres) and associative resources available for victims of physical, psychological, and sexual violence in Switzerland. They can be placed on toilet paper dispensers or just above, on the inside of restroom doors, near sinks, or on hand dryers.

Some figures in Switzerland en Suisse

According to a national survey conducted in April 2019 by gfs.bern (N=4’495), 22%¹ of women aged 16 and over report having experienced non-consensual sexual acts. Among them, 64% did not contact the police due to shame, 62% felt it would be futile, 58% feared they wouldn’t be believed, 57% were afraid that filing a report would worsen their situation, and 51% were unsure they had the right to do so. Only 10% reported the incidents to the police, and 8% filed a formal complaint.

Furthermore, a representative study conducted in autumn 2021 by the Sotomo Institute

revealed that 42%² of women in Switzerland have already suffered intimate partner violence.

Extrapolated to the total female population of Switzerland aged 16 and over (approximately 3.6 million according to the Swiss Federal Office of Statistics in 2019), this would correspond to ¹ nearly 800,000 women and ² more than 1,500,000 women.

The need for information

The gap between the acts of violence experienced and the acts of violence reported shows that victims and their loved ones could be informed better about available actions and support structures for victims of violence. This is precisely the purpose of the website www.victimepasseule.ch.

Why choose restrooms? Because they are an ideal location for such a campaign. Firstly, because everyone uses them. And most importantly, because the privacy of the location allows individuals to discreetly access this resource.
